Here During Your Journey
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress. EMDR is an evidence-based technique that was discovered by the late Francine Shaprio. She discovered that when traumas occur, we get stuck in the emotional right side of our brain. She also discovered that bilateral stimulus (BLS) which the clinician uses to make the eyes move from side-to-side engaged the entire brain much like REM sleep. The use of these movements while thinking about the trauma made the pain seem disconnected from the client. She used the metaphor of seeing a movie on a screen. Today, EMDR is the gold standard for trauma care, and the technique also helps many other issues including anxiety and depression.
At Hælan Counseling, we employ this technique to assist in your healing. I have personally gone through the confusion and darkness of PTSD. Through my own experience, I understand how intimidating it is to contemplate our past. I will be there by your side during this process to provide encouragement and strength during your journey.
